Compare LED Lighting to Alternate Energy Saving, Carbon Footprint Reducing Opportunities

Saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a huge undertaking for a business of any size. Luckily there are many ways to cut costs and shrink your carbon footprint with some taking more time and resources than others.

One effective but expensive way businesses are saving money on their electrical bills is by installing Energy Saver LED lighting indoor and outdoors.

According to the Department of Energy, LED lighting uses 75 percent less energy and lasts 25 times longer than traditional bulbs. This can be huge for a business that lights large areas both indoors and outdoors.

An example of a larger scale retrofit is Byron Center High School in Grand Rapids Michigan. According to a Home Depot case study the school completed a complete LED retrofit reducing their energy usage by 1.5 million kilowatt hours and saving more than $170,000 in the 18 months since the installation. The overhaul included replacing more than 6,000 bulbs in more than 3,000 lighting fixtures.

Though the installation cost more than $500,000 the school district expects to recoup the installation costs in four years with the savings afterward going right back into the classroom.

Other instances of large savings by switching to LED lighting is, according to Forbes, the City of Los Angeles’ Green LA initiative that replaced 114,000 streetlights resulting in $5.3 million in savings every year.

While the savings are significant the cost of installation can be too much for many businesses to front at once. Many businesses are instead choosing to install harmonics filters to make their electrical use more efficient for a fraction of the price.

Installing an Onics Harmonic Energy Filter is significantly less expensive than a LED retrofit costing around $250 per electrical panel. For example installing harmonics filters in a 100-room hotel would cost around $7,000 whereas a complete LED retrofit could easily cost two or three times more.

While an Onics Harmonics Filter may not result in such drastic savings as an expansive LED retrofit they save most businesses up to 25 percent in electrical costs and businesses are able to recoup that initial spend much faster.

All in all doing anything to reduce your business’ carbon footprint is a great thing. Whether you choose an LED retrofit or an energy filter you will see savings and energy conservation. But compared to many other methods the fastest and cheapest way to see true savings quickly and consistently is through the patented Onics Energy Harmonics reduction technology.
